About the position

O'Neal Steel is seeking a dedicated Loader for the 3rd shift at our Birmingham, AL facility. This position is crucial for the efficient operation of our warehouse, where the Loader will be responsible for loading and unloading materials. The Loader will utilize various material handling equipment, including hand trucks, forklifts, overhead cranes, conveyors, spotter trucks, and trailers, to move materials to and from trucks or trains and within the storage facility. The role requires a solid understanding of commonly used practices and procedures, relying on established guidelines to perform job functions effectively. The Loader will spend a significant portion of their time (70% or more) performing loading duties, which includes safely loading multi-stop loads for customer delivery. A strong understanding of load balancing is essential to meet DOT weight regulations for legal and over-dimensional loads. The Loader will also verify the accuracy of materials, quantities, packaging, and any special instructions for each order being shipped. This position demands critical thinking skills for planning and problem-solving, as well as the ability to learn and retain a wide range of product knowledge and standard handling and rigging procedures across all products. In addition to loading duties, the Loader will be responsible for maintaining a safe and organized work area, performing all tasks in accordance with established safety procedures. The shift schedule for this position is Sunday to Thursday, from 8 PM to 4 AM, with overtime required as needed. Candidates must pass a criminal background check and drug test upon offer of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload material within the warehouse.
  • Utilize hand trucks, forklifts, overhead cranes, conveyors, spotter trucks, and trailers to move material to and from trucks or trains.
  • Safely load multi-stop loads for customer delivery.
  • Verify the accuracy of material, quantity, packaging, and special instructions for each order being shipped.
  • Perform loading duties 70% of the time or greater.
  • Use a variety of hand tools including grinders, banders, drills, hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, and wrenches.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work area and perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate a wide variety of material handling equipment including forklifts and overhead cranes.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools including grinders, banders, drills, hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, and wrenches.
  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure.
  • Strong understanding of load balancing to meet DOT weight regulations for legal and over-dimensional loads.
  • Critical thinking skills for planning and problem-solving.
  • Ability to learn and retain a large range of product knowledge and standard handling and rigging procedures.
