About the position

Conrad Yelvington Distributors, a CRH company, is seeking an Equipment Operator (EO) to join our team. The EO will be responsible for moving, loading, and handling aggregate materials in the terminal area using heavy equipment. This role is crucial as it involves operating large earth-moving machines such as bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, and front-end loaders to lift, haul, push, roll, load, and move various aggregate materials including granite, river gravel, limestone, and natural sand. The primary responsibility of the EO is to operate these expensive machines safely and efficiently, ensuring that all health and safety standards are met in compliance with legislation and company policies. In this position, the EO will conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, ensuring that it is clean, lubricated, and refilled as necessary. The operator will assist the Yard Manager and/or Yard Foreman in coordinating materials handling and equipment usage, and will be required to perform various tasks as instructed. The role demands physical strength, as the EO must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform manual labor as needed. The ability to work outdoors for extended periods, sometimes under adverse weather conditions, is essential. Effective communication skills are also necessary for maintaining relationships with coworkers and the public. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the capabilities and safe operation of heavy equipment, as well as knowledge of traffic and safety rules. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, along with three years of experience in public works maintenance and/or construction work, including at least one year of heavy equipment operation. Responsibilities

  • Ensure Health & Safety standards are met by complying with legislation and company policies.
  • Operate backhoes, bulldozers, loaders and/or other heavy equipment to excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel or other materials.
  • Operate heavy equipment to move, load and unload materials into/out of railcars and/or other modes of transportation.
  • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment and clean, lubricate and refill equipment.
  • Assist Yard Manager and/or Yard Foreman in coordinating materials handling and equipment usage.
  • Perform general construction equipment operations at the terminal when given training.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds as required.
  • Complete miscellaneous jobs according to instructions given.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma preferred.
  • Three years of experience in public works maintenance and/or construction work, one year of which involves the operation of a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Must maintain a safe driving record and have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to keep records and make oral or written reports.
  • Ability to make simple arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to climb, bend, stoop, and squat frequently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to work long hours outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using speaking, hearing, writing, and vision skills.
