About the position

The Environmental Specialist position at FEMA is a temporary local hire role focused on assisting with disaster response and recovery efforts in Columbia, South Carolina. The role involves providing expertise in Environmental/Historic Preservation (EHP) reviews, compliance, and reporting, contributing to the recovery of the community by addressing environmental impacts related to disasters. Local hires are expected to work full-time for a term of 120 days, with the possibility of extensions based on the needs of the disaster.

Responsibilities

  • Provide subject matter expertise in Environmental/Historic Preservation (EHP) review, reports, and compliance.
  • Collect data on environmental resources and issues related to potential impacts and prepare written reports and documents.
  • Identify EHP resource considerations in a Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA).
  • Make determinations of effect on EHP resources beyond established agreements/protocols for streamlined review.
  • Coordinate the integration of environmental reviews with concurrent historic preservation and floodplain reviews.
  • Organize documents and consolidate them into the EHP disaster record.
