About the position

The Locksmith 1 position at the University of Miami is designed to support skilled locksmiths in the maintenance, operation, and repair of access and locking systems. This role is essential for ensuring the effective operation of access and locking equipment, which is critical for the security and functionality of the university's facilities. The Locksmith 1 will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include keeping tradesmen supplied with necessary materials and tools, assisting them by holding materials and tools, and maintaining cleanliness in the working area, machines, and equipment. The position requires adherence to safety rules and regulations, including OSHA standards, and involves performing unskilled or semi-skilled work independently while using sound judgment. In addition to the core responsibilities, the Locksmith 1 must be available for emergency call-ins and adhere to university policies and procedures to safeguard university assets. The role may require working outside of normal hours, including shift work, responding to after-hour emergencies, and covering holidays or weekends as needed. The Locksmith 1 will also be responsible for administering ONITY/CBORD electronic access updates and troubleshooting related issues on the Gables Campus. This includes having a basic understanding of low voltage electronics and systems, as well as managing key access through the Keytrak software. The position involves making keys for various types of locks, installing and maintaining locks and locking equipment, adjusting door closures and hinges, and unlocking locks when keys are lost or stolen. The Locksmith 1 will also be expected to repair and renovate locks as needed, plan and execute work and special projects, and demonstrate strong communication skills to effectively handle conflict resolution and problem-solving. The role requires excellent organizational and time-management skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment to provide customer-oriented service that meets the changing needs of the university.

Responsibilities

  • Keeps various tradesmen supplied with materials and tools.
  • Assists various tradesmen by holding materials and tools.
  • Cleans working area, machines and equipment.
  • Performs other tasks as directed and supervised by various tradesmen.
  • Observes safety rules, regulations, OSHA, and proper handling of equipment.
  • Performs unskilled or semi-skilled work without supervision using independent judgement.
  • Available to support emergency call-ins.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Capably administrates all ONITY/CBORD electronic access updates.
  • Troubleshoots access-related issues for the Gables Campus.
  • Administers the Keytrak software to control key access for departmental employees.
  • Makes keys for padlocks, doors, cabinets, lockers, and desks.
  • Installs, maintains, adjusts, services and resets all types of locks and locking equipment.
  • Adjusts and installs door closures and hinges.
  • Unlocks locks when keys are lost or stolen.
  • Repairs and renovates locks on a periodic basis or as needed.
  • Plans, lies out, and performs work and special projects.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
