About the position

The Locksmith position at the University of Washington involves performing skilled locksmith work, including the repair, installation, and construction of locks and locking devices across campus facilities. The role is essential for maintaining security and providing key services to students and staff, ensuring a safe and functional environment. The position requires a combination of technical skills, customer service, and teamwork, contributing to the overall maintenance and construction efforts of the university's facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Make and issue keys required by students and staff in their use of offices, laboratories and other facilities throughout the campus.
  • Repair malfunctioning locks; rekey locks to improve building security.
  • Maintain master key system.
  • Order key blanks, lock parts, locksets, latches and other materials required to maintain a working inventory.
  • Inspect key and locking systems for buildings.
  • Develop cost estimates for installation and repairs.
  • Change combinations of safes and vaults.
  • Perform emergency keying and opening services on locks and safes.
  • Make recommendations for hardware types.
  • Use and maintain hand and power tools such as lock picks, drills, and wood chisels.
  • Operate key duplicating machines, drill press, grinders and other power and hand tools required for accomplishing work.
  • Install, service and maintain mechanical and electric lock systems, both hardwired and stand alone.
  • Service, adjust and perform preventative maintenance on locks, doors, closers, latch plates, coordinators, panic and exit devices and other door related hardware.
  • Repair, install and maintain locks on cabinets, vehicles, lockers and doors.
  • Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites and to deliver keys.
  • Instruct semi-skilled workers as needed.
  • Participate in and follow through with M&C process improvement initiatives, including Balanced Scorecard (BSC).
  • Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.
  • Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community.

Requirements

  • Three years' full-time experience as a locksmith helper/trainee.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction, work well with others and as a member of a team, and in providing excellent customer services.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.
