About the position

The Locksmith position at Stevens Institute of Technology involves performing journey-level work in the installation, repair, remodeling, and maintenance of manual and automated locks, locking systems, and security devices, including computerized card access systems. Under general supervision, the locksmith will interpret the Master Keying Guide and utilize their specialized knowledge of lock systems to maintain the integrity of the university's master key system while accommodating customer requests. This role requires a hands-on approach to various tasks, including assisting with the installation and repair of locks and security devices, as well as door hardware and hydraulic closing fixtures. The locksmith will be responsible for disassembling locks, repairing and replacing worn tumblers, springs, and other components. They will also cut new or duplicate keys under supervision and maintain accurate records of keys issued and returned. Additionally, the locksmith will keep detailed records of work performed, ensuring proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, while promoting continuous improvement in workplace safety and environmental practices. Troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of mechanical locking and electronic key card systems will also be part of the job responsibilities, along with performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. This position requires a high school diploma or GED, or at least one year of relevant experience. The locksmith must possess a valid New Jersey driver's license and will need to undergo a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. The working conditions involve moderate physical activity, including handling average-weight objects up to 25 pounds and standing or walking for more than four hours per day. The role may also involve exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets Master Keying Guide and maintains the integrity of the university's master key system.
  • Assists with installations, services, and repairs of various types of locks and security devices.
  • Assists with installing and repairing door hardware and hydraulic closing fixtures.
  • Disassembles locks and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts.
  • Cuts new or duplicate keys and stamps with identification under supervision.
  • Issues keys and maintains records of keys issued and returned.
  • Maintains records of work performed under the supervision of the Lock Shop Supervisor.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Assists with troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of mechanical locking and electronic key card systems.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and/or GED, or 1 year of experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Ability to cut and issue keys, re-key, install and repair locks and hardware.
  • Ability to interpret, implement, and maintain pre-defined master key systems.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair both mechanical locking and electronic access control devices.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
