About the position

The Locksmith position at the Los Angeles County Department of Human Resources involves performing journey-level locksmith work, including the installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of various locking devices. This role is critical in ensuring the security of facilities, particularly in custody environments such as jails and mental hospitals. The locksmith will work independently, utilizing their expertise to troubleshoot and resolve locking system issues, while also maintaining master key systems and ensuring proper functioning of locks and hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, install, adjust, repair, and rebuild locks and detention hardware.
  • Open locks that cannot be opened by ordinary means.
  • Duplicate existing keys and create new keys using key cutting machines.
  • Change key and cylinder combinations according to master key system changes.
  • Establish, expand, and modify master key coding systems.
  • Issue keys and locks, maintaining related distribution records.
  • Operate machine tools for fabricating and modifying lock and panic hardware parts.
  • Change safe combinations and repair safe locking mechanisms.
  • Inspect, maintain, adjust, and repair panic hardware and related locking devices.
  • Interact with coworkers to share work information and coordinate assistance.
  • Drive to satellite locations for security concerns and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and combination locking devices, with one year in a journey-level capacity.
  • Completion of a recognized locksmith apprenticeship program of at least three years duration.
