About the position

The University of Texas at Arlington is seeking a skilled Locksmith to join its Police Department. This full-time position is responsible for providing journeyman-level skills in the repair, resetting, and installation of locking devices, as well as the manufacture of keys. The successful candidate will be tasked with repairing, rebuilding, and resetting locks, and cutting keys for various locks in buildings, cabinets, and lockers across the campus. The Locksmith will also be responsible for installing, repairing, re-keying, and master keying most door locks on campus, ensuring the security and functionality of all locking mechanisms. In this role, the Locksmith will maintain familiarity with common locksmithing problems and will be expected to repair, alter, and install locks and keys of various types. The position requires the use of specialized equipment, tools, and materials associated with locksmith work. The Locksmith will diagnose issues likely to be encountered on campus, organize assigned work, analyze routine and emergency problems, and develop effective work methods to address them. Responsibilities also include requisitioning needed equipment and materials, safeguarding and recording them appropriately, and utilizing computers and electronic equipment to fulfill job functions. Participation in in-service and workshop programs, as well as attending required meetings, is also expected. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, proficient experience with computers, and the ability to use various Windows-based programs. A valid Texas driver's license with no serious violations is required. Preferred qualifications include three years of experience as a journeyman locksmith, with comprehensive knowledge in the repair, re-keying, and installation of locks and keys, including knowledge of Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC). The position offers a salary starting at $50,357 per year, commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide journeyman-level skills in the repair, resetting, and installation of locking devices and the manufacture of keys.
  • Repair, alter, and install locks and keys of various types.
  • Use equipment, tools, and materials used in locksmith work.
  • Diagnose locksmith problems likely to be encountered on the campus of UT Arlington.
  • Organize assigned locksmith work, analyze routine and emergency problems, and develop effective work methods.
  • Repair locks, padlocks, door locks, and key locks.
  • Make and repair keys of various types and operate key machines.
  • Set up and reset lock cylinders; rebuild and install locks; lube, repair, and check locks; make parts for locks and change lock combinations by repining cores.
  • Requisition needed equipment, materials, and supplies, and ensure they are properly safeguarded and recorded.
  • Use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.
  • Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend any required meetings.
  • Perform other functions as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Proficient experience with computers and the ability to use various Windows-based programs.
  • Hold and maintain a valid Texas driver's license with no serious violations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three years of experience as a journeyman locksmith with comprehensive experience in the repair, re-key, and installation of locks and keys, including knowledge of SFIC.
