About the position

The Diesel Repair Technician at Watco is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining locomotives in accordance with company policies and federal regulations. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety and efficiency of locomotive operations, and it requires a strong commitment to teamwork and communication. The technician will be expected to perform mechanical maintenance tasks, work collaboratively with other departments, and maintain a respectful workplace environment. On-the-job training will be provided, allowing new hires to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in this position. The technician will implement and comply with the company's safety plan, ensuring that all safety protocols are followed. They will also be responsible for communicating effectively with all parties involved in locomotive operations, including customers and connecting railroads, to ensure a high level of customer service and efficient interchange of cars and locomotives. The role involves performing air tests, inspecting locomotives for structural defects, and adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). In addition to technical skills, the technician must possess the ability to complete necessary reports and documentation, including those required by the FRA. They will also be expected to develop the skills of subordinate employees, ensuring that there are qualified successors in place. The position requires familiarity with various tools and equipment used in locomotive maintenance, as well as the ability to solve practical problems in a dynamic work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, repair, and maintain locomotives according to company policies and federal regulations.
  • Implement and comply with the company safety plan.
  • Foster a respectful workplace environment.
  • Communicate clearly with all parties involved in locomotive operations.
  • Coordinate locomotive mechanical department functions with other departments.
  • Perform air tests and inspect locomotives for structural defects and wear.
  • Ensure compliance with FRA guidelines on Personal Blue Signal Protection of Workers.
  • Work with customers to provide a high level of customer service.
  • Collaborate with connecting railroads for efficient interchange of cars and locomotives.
  • Complete written forms and reports, including necessary FRA reports.
  • Become a qualified locomotive inspector according to FRA regulations.
  • Perform emergency repairs and re-railing of railroad rolling stock.
  • Develop the skills of subordinate employees to ensure qualified successors are in place.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a three-year Railroad Apprenticeship or four years of railroad-related experience, or five years of experience in another mechanical field.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with customers and employees.
  • Valid driver's license and insurability by the company insurance provider.
  • Ability to become a qualified Service Engineer according to FRA regulations.

Nice-to-haves
