About the position

The Locum Associate or Senior Editor for Nature Reviews Earth & Environment is responsible for leading and shaping the Solid Earth area of the journal. This role involves commissioning reviews, managing peer-review processes, and liaising with the scientific community. The position is offered on a full-time basis for an initial period of 9 months, with the possibility of extension, and is based in either London or New York under a hybrid working model.

Responsibilities

• Commission narrative reviews and opinion pieces.
• Work closely with authors throughout the writing and revision process by providing feedback on synopses, developmentally editing first drafts, line-by-line editing the final manuscript pre-acceptance, and developing ideas for figures and other display items.
• Organize and manage peer-review.
• Write Research Highlights and other editorial content.
• Liaise extensively with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences, virtually or in-person.

Requirements

• A PhD in any aspect of Earth science, preferably within solid Earth (seismology, volcanology, geophysics, geochemistry, etc.).
• Demonstrable ability to edit text for sense, clarity, factual correctness and language.
• Strong writing ability.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Keen attention to detail.
• Ability to absorb new areas of research and identify new developments and research trends in fields beyond their immediate speciality.
• Willingness to travel to meet scientists, learn about their work and advocate for the journal.
