About the position

The Long-Term Substitute Teacher position is responsible for providing instructional support and guidance to students in a classroom setting. This role involves implementing educational plans, assessing student performance, and collaborating with parents and other professionals to promote student development. The teacher will also maintain a safe and nurturing environment while adhering to educational standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Builds trust and confidence in students
  • Administers standardized ability and achievement tests, and interprets results to determine students' strengths and areas of need
  • Observes and evaluates students' performance, behavior, social development, physical health, and reviews information from all relevant sources
  • Confers with parents, administrators, psychologist, speech therapists, social workers, and/or other professionals to develop individual educational plans designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social development
  • Prepares goals and objectives, following curriculum guidelines and/or requirements of the state and school
  • Provides assistive learning devices and supportive technology to assist student needs
  • Provides grade reports to parents/guardians
  • Meets with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records, and prepares reports on students on caseload as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations including completion of Medicaid reports in a timely manner
  • Employs special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory
  • Teaches personal development skills such as goal setting, independence, and self-advocacy
  • Prepares students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks
  • Monitors teachers and teacher assistants to ensure that they adhere to inclusive special education program requirements
  • Helps in modifying curriculum with classroom teachers based on individual student needs
  • Prepares, administers, and grades tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress
  • Meets with parents and guardians to provide guidance in using community resources, and to teach skills for dealing with students' impairments
  • Uses computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to aid in learning
  • Attends professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence
  • Participates in special education meetings
  • Maintains high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information
  • Selects, stores, orders, issues, and inventories classroom equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Maintains a safe and nurturing environment
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Valid Daily Sub Permit or Michigan Teacher Certification
  • Previous teaching experience preferred
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs
  • Ability to evaluate students, plan, and implement individual developmental plans
  • Ability to perform duties associated with being a case manager

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in writing skills
  • Knowledge of the English language including meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
