About the position

The Long Term Substitute English Learner Education (ELE) Teacher for Grades 1-5 at Norwood Public Schools is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to English Language Learners (ELL) in accordance with the approved curriculum. This position involves consulting with classroom teachers to coordinate services tailored to the needs of ELL students, ensuring that they receive appropriate learning experiences that foster their English language development. The teacher will implement instructional strategies that align with the curriculum and the specific requirements set forth by the Department of Education. In addition to direct instruction, the teacher will provide academic content support services to all ELL students, helping them to access the general education curriculum effectively. This includes administering various assessments such as entry, exit, and annual testing, which encompasses Placement and Exit Assessments as well as the annual standard ACCESS assessments. Monitoring the progress of former ELL students is also a critical component of this role, ensuring that they continue to thrive academically after exiting the ELL program. The teacher will actively participate in Student Support Team (SST) meetings, collaborating with other educators and support staff to address the needs of ELL students comprehensively. Furthermore, the role includes providing training for all staff on strategies and best practices for supporting ELL students, thereby fostering an inclusive educational environment that meets the diverse needs of all learners.

Responsibilities

  • Consults with classroom teachers to coordinate services for ELL students.
  • Provides learning experiences and teaches English language development instruction as prescribed by the Norwood Public Schools approved curriculum.
  • Provides academic content support services for all ELL students.
  • Administers entry, exit and annual testing to all ELL students including Placement and Exit Assessment and annual standard (ACCESS) assessments.
  • Monitors former ELL students.
  • Participates in Student Support Team (SST) Meetings.
  • Provides SES training for all staff.

Requirements

  • Experience in teaching English language learners or related field.
  • Knowledge of English language development and instructional strategies for ELL students.
  • Ability to administer and interpret assessments for ELL students.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with classroom teachers and support staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with the Norwood Public Schools curriculum and policies.
  • Experience in a K-5 educational setting.
