About the position

The Long Term Substitute - Secondary Special Education Teacher at Fairport High School is responsible for meeting the educational needs of students with special needs in grades 6-12. This role involves implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting student progress, and providing a safe learning environment. The teacher will work under the supervision of the Director of Secondary Special Education and collaborate with other staff to support students' academic and personal growth.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations of students to identify learning issues and recommend corrective procedures.
  • Participate in Student Support Teams (SSTs) and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Assist students and teaching staff in implementing students' IEPs and behavior management plans.
  • Coordinate with administrators and other teaching staff to ascertain individual students' abilities and needs.
  • Serve as a resource to students and parents, providing counseling to promote personal growth and behavioral management.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping and provide student information to prospective colleges and employers.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators.

Requirements

  • New York State Certification in Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Master's Degree in Special Education.
  • Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
