About the position

Barker Central School District is seeking a dynamic Long-term Substitute AIS Teacher who is student-centered and part of a collaborative team. The role focuses on improving students' learning abilities and fostering a positive growth mindset within the learning community. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, possess strong interpersonal skills, and be committed to the district's vision and mission of nurturing lifelong learners.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and grade coursework and assignments based upon district-adopted curriculum
  • Assess student's skills and learning needs, setting goals for effective instruction plans
  • Establish clear expectations and objectives for all lessons and communicate them to students
  • Select reading and curriculum-development materials in accordance with guidelines
  • Prepare students for standardized tests and provide diagnostic feedback
  • Manage classrooms and implement school procedures with diverse students
  • Meet one-on-one with students to improve performance and address behavioral issues
  • Introduce STEAM-related topics and incorporate new models of the inclusive classroom
  • Utilize positive reinforcement and behavior modification techniques
  • Adapt learning materials to students' needs and look for engaging activities
  • Communicate and collaborate with administration and other staff to support student progress
  • Prepare students for transition to the next grade and consult with parents/guardians
  • Plan and supervise class projects and field trips
  • Participate in student-related committees and staff meetings
  • Engage in continuous professional development
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Superintendent or designee.

Requirements

  • New York State Certification in Elementary Education
  • Bachelor's degree in elementary education or related field
  • Proven experience as an AIS or elementary education teacher
  • Knowledge of NYS standards
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Training in behavioral analysis and modification
  • Proven problem-solving skills
  • A patient, resourceful, compassionate, and resilient personality

Nice-to-haves

  • Additional NYS certifications preferred
  • Knowledge of current reading education topics and methodologies
  • Ability to implement school procedures and policies
