About the position

The Long-Term Substitute Teaching Assistant for Special Education provides direct instructional support and supervision for students with special needs. This role is essential in assisting certified staff in creating a safe and effective learning environment, particularly for students on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The position requires a valid teaching license and involves working closely with students to support their educational and personal development.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with physical needs such as toileting, eating, and dressing.
  • Observe, record, and chart student behavior under the direction of the teacher.
  • Support the teacher in managing crises and behavior issues.
  • Facilitate group educational activities for students on IEPs.
  • Implement tutoring activities designed by the teacher for students on IEPs.
  • Collaborate with teachers on classroom and IEP objectives and modifications.
  • Maintain classroom organization and cleanliness.
  • Monitor students during independent study and supplementary work.
  • Participate in professional development activities and meetings.
  • Prepare classroom materials related to IEPs and modifications.
  • Supervise students in various settings including hallways, lunchrooms, and playgrounds.
  • Support individual instruction for students, including those on IEPs, under teacher supervision.
  • Utilize audio-visual equipment and assistive technology as needed for IEP accommodations.
  • Assist in developing classroom schedules with teachers.
  • Transport students in District vehicles when required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned while maintaining confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Valid SUB License registered in Lake County (PARA, PEL, or ELS(TBE) licenses acceptable).
  • Knowledge of diverse student backgrounds and their impact on learning.
  • Understanding of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RtI).
  • Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and district policies.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and social skills to engage with students and staff.
  • Ability to adapt instructional strategies to meet student needs under teacher guidance.
  • Skills in collecting and recording performance data while respecting confidentiality.
  • Ability to promote student independence and social skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with students with special needs.
  • Familiarity with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Knowledge of various instructional methods and techniques.

Benefits
