About the position

The GIS Data Architect position is a critical role within the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB) Agency Services, specifically supporting the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). This position is designed for a professional with a strong background in GIS-IT and enterprise data architecture, who will work closely with various stakeholders including the Enterprise Application Architect, Enterprise Data Architect, and MDOT's GIS Team. The role requires a deep understanding of GIS data needs and the ability to develop effective data solutions that integrate GIS systems with other applications, both in-house and vendor-based. The GIS Data Architect will be responsible for collaborating with GIS data authors and consumers, as well as with administrators and specialists in the Roads & Highways domain. This collaboration will involve working with MDOT's Spatial Data Engine (SDE) Geodatabase Administrators, information management staff, solution developers, and business domain stakeholders such as information managers and data stewards. The architect will play a key role in understanding the data collected in the Roads & Highways Database and the data needs of MDOT's applications, ensuring accuracy, standardization, and synchronization of GIS data across platforms. In addition to integration responsibilities, the GIS Data Architect will manage the ArcGIS License manager, which includes setting up and updating MDOT's ESRI License manager and periodically adding licenses. This position is hybrid, requiring onsite presence two days a week, and candidates must be located within a commutable distance to Lansing, MI. The role demands excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with various levels of the organization and to represent DTMB Agency Services in key meetings regarding GIS data.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with MDOT's GIS Team and application business leads to understand GIS data needs.
  • Integrate MDOT applications with ESRI Roads and Highways for GIS data.
  • Manage the ArcGIS License manager, including setup and updates.
  • Participate in key meetings as a DTMB Agency Service representative to discuss GIS needs.
  • Assist in the annual migration of MDOT applications and improve the migration process.
  • Build model data workflows to extract, transform, and load GIS data using ArcGIS Model Builder.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in GIS-IT and enterprise data architecture.
  • Expert level experience with ESRI ArcGIS products such as ArcCatalog, ArcMap, or ArcPro.
  • Minimum of 2 years integrating GIS systems built on relational databases with other applications.
  • Ability to quickly comprehend the GIS needs of applications and develop smart data solutions.
  • Experience using the ESRI Roads and Highways Database and ESRI Versioned/non-Versioned Datasets.
  • Knowledge in Python Programming using the ArcPy and ArcGIS Python API.
  • Demonstrable experience in building GIS integration capabilities with applications.
  • Knowledge and proven skills in MS SQL Server Spatial and Oracle Spatial.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate at all levels of the organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Spatial ETL tools such as Safe FME.
