About the position

The Service Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing telecommunications and data/IT equipment at client locations. This role requires a strong technical background in low voltage systems, including fiber optic and copper cabling, and involves traveling to various sites to ensure high-quality customer service and effective installation of telecommunication solutions. The technician is expected to work with minimal supervision and may lead teams on specific projects.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, neat, professional appearance while wearing the company uniform during project duties.
  • Travel to client sites to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve telecommunications and data/IT equipment issues.
  • Install both copper and fiber optic cable properly.
  • Terminate copper cable (Cat5e, Cat6, etc.) correctly.
  • Create and install labels accurately.
  • Perform all component and system testing as required.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Understand basic wiring diagrams and installation instructions.
  • Perform as crew leader when assigned, ensuring team members complete their tasks on time.
  • Terminate common types of fiber optic fittings (SC, ST, LC) efficiently and to industry standards.
  • Complete telecommunication room build-outs including rack construction and wire management.
  • Articulate differences in testing requirements for various categories of copper media.
  • Configure and set up test equipment for required tests on copper media.
  • Perform and document optical attenuation tests on optical strands.
  • Configure, operate, and analyze test data from Optical Time Domain Reflectometers.
  • Understand and apply the National Electrical Code and Local Building Codes to low voltage projects.
  • Ground and bond components according to project scope and industry standards.
  • Train other technicians as needed.

Requirements

  • 4 years of experience in the installation of cabling for telecom systems, TCP/IP networks, CCTV security, access control, and wireless solutions.
  • Ability to install, terminate, and test low voltage and fiber optic cables.
  • Strong understanding of low voltage infrastructure and related services.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Finger and wrist dexterity, and hand/eye coordination.
  • Ability to work from heights using proper fall protection.
  • Proficient in using small hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, lift up to 50 lbs., and drive a vehicle.
  • Proficient in MS Office, specifically Excel, Word, Visio, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
