About the position

The Town of Apex is seeking candidates for year-long graduate internships. As a fast-growing community in southwestern Wake County, this full-service municipality offers an abundance of opportunities for MPA students looking to gain professional experience while applying their coursework in real-time. As a Budget and Management Intern, students will have the opportunity to participate in town-wide strategic decisions, assist with various boards and committees, attend Town Council meetings, address research inquiries, and other duties crucial to town operations. Enthusiastic and analytical MPA students will help us continue making our community 'the peak of good living.' The interns' daily responsibilities will be to assist the Budget & Performance Management team with various tasks and projects. The interns will play an important role in our continued efforts to implement, evaluate, and improve the Town's strategic plan. The interns' primary challenge will be monitoring departmental budget and performance data, and ensuring these measures align with department missions and Town Council's strategic while providing relevant indicators that demonstrate the town's successes and/or opportunities. Budget staff will also enlist the interns to assist in identifying and developing opportunities for public engagement in the budget process, and in development of the annual operating budget and creation of the budget book. Interns are included in professional development activities, programs and sponsored for attendance at professional conferences and trainings.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of the Town's annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Town's strategic plan.
  • Compile, review, and analyze performance data for NC Benchmarking project report.
  • Compile and review data for monthly manager's report.
  • Participate in team building and Town Activities.
  • Use budget software to capture and evaluate requests.
  • Evaluate funding and program requests to help departments develop and prioritize options.
  • Monitor budgets throughout the fiscal year.
  • Assist departments in achieving goals and objectives by providing analytical support.
  • Work with Budget team to draft budget message, publications, work session materials, agenda items, and other strategic communications.
  • Other special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a MPA program.
