About the position

The Senior Systems Design Engineer will focus on Low Voltage and Medium Voltage Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Systems, providing application, design, and engineering support to the North American sales team. The role involves determining the best fit for Schneider Electric products through expertise in electronic motor control, automation, and machine control/safety systems. The position requires collaboration with various teams to define complex technical solutions and manage product specifications throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with local sales marketing and project management to define large/complex technical solutions during tendering phases.
  • Address alternative preliminary solutions in accordance with customer requests with proper design, industrial, quality, and cost considerations.
  • Establish and manage detailed product definition files including firmware scripts, electrical drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Lead all technical aspects of complex solutions during execution phases, including design, integration, testing, FAT, installation, and commissioning.
  • Define FAT-Field application test plans and implement technical corrective actions as needed.
  • Contribute to meeting project objectives in scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Assist the Project Manager in developing alternative solutions during change order management.
  • Apply suitable tools/methods (E-plan, Visual C++, Java, etc.) to ensure and optimize design quality.
  • Provide technical support to field personnel and field sales engineers, including system start-up and troubleshooting assistance.
  • Assist global R&D and local marketing teams for continuous product evolution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or above in Electrical Engineering or similar.
  • 10+ years of successful and relevant experience with variable frequency drives or industrial controls.
  • Practical knowledge and experience in the application of PLCs, HMIs, control products, and motor control outside of VFDs.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical standards including NEC, UL-508A, and UL 61800-5-1, UL347A.
  • Experience with Computer Aided Drafting software (AutoCad, Eplan, SEE XP, ProEngineer).
  • Ability to design and document drive assemblies based on basic conceptual information, including customer documents.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent problem resolution skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
