About the position

As a Machine Learning Engineer at DoorDash, you will play a pivotal role in developing and enhancing the ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) and Routing models that are essential for our three-sided marketplace, which includes consumers, merchants, and dashers. This position is a key investment area for DoorDash, where you will tackle some of the most exciting and complex problems at scale, significantly impacting the company's operations and its various business lines. You will leverage our robust data and machine learning infrastructure to create inference and optimization models that will affect millions of users. In this role, you will collaborate closely with data scientists, engineers, and product managers to iterate on models that not only drive business growth but also improve service quality for our customers. Your responsibilities will include building deep learning models that provide accurate and scalable time predictions, thereby enhancing the consumer experience. Additionally, you will develop machine learning models in the routing domain, establishing a single source of truth that can positively influence key business metrics across internal teams. You will own the entire modeling lifecycle, which encompasses feature creation, model development and testing, experimentation, monitoring, explainability, and ongoing model maintenance. This position offers exposure to new opportunities where ETA and Routing can serve as levers for expanding into new business areas, markets, and regions. Responsibilities

  • Build Deep Learning models for next-generation ETA that provide accurate and scalable time predictions.
  • Develop Machine Learning models in the routing space to serve as a single source of truth across internal teams.
  • Own the modeling life cycle end-to-end, including feature creation, model development, testing, experimentation, monitoring, explainability, and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and product managers to iterate on models that drive business growth and improve service quality.
  • Explore new opportunities where ETA/Routing can benefit new business, markets, and regions.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of industry experience post PhD or 3+ years of industry experience post graduate degree in developing advanced machine learning models with business impact.
  • M.S. or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, or related quantitative fields.
  • Strong background in Deep Learning and open-source ML technologies such as Spark, PyTorch, and Airflow with hands-on experience in production.
  • Demonstrated expertise with programming languages such as Python and machine learning libraries like LightGBM, Spark MLLib, and PyTorch.
  • Deep understanding of complex systems such as Marketplaces, with domain knowledge in Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Operations Research, and Forecasting.
  • Experience in shipping production-grade ML models and optimization systems, and designing sophisticated experimentation techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices and version control systems.
