About the position

As a Machine Learning Engineer specializing in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Multimodal systems at TikTok, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our E-commerce platform. This position is centered around the design and development of NLP-related solutions that will significantly improve user engagement and satisfaction on TikTok Shop. You will be part of a dynamic team of applied machine learning engineers and data scientists dedicated to creating innovative algorithms and techniques that connect customers with quality products through E-commerce live-streaming, short videos, and personalized recommendations. Your primary responsibilities will include building an intent classifier that involves designing a taxonomy, managing high-quality labeled data, and training advanced machine learning models such as BERT and GPT. You will also develop prediction models that map user shopping journeys to chatbot actions, utilizing cutting-edge techniques like Boosting and deep CTR models. Additionally, you will work on generation models that interpret business requests and fine-tune large language models with billions of parameters to enhance the chatbot's capabilities. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work closely with product and operation teams to quantitatively assess the impact of the chatbot and ensure that business improvement actions are effectively translated into model optimization strategies. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply large-scale machine learning to real-world E-commerce challenges, driving significant business impact while fostering creativity and innovation within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Build the intent classifier in a full-stack manner by designing taxonomy, creating and managing high quality labeled data, training the best performed machine learning model (like Bert, GPT), and monitoring the online performance of the model.
  • Build the prediction model by mapping the shopping journey of users to chatbot actions, including suggesting common question-answers and transferring the user to a human agent, with cutting-edge prediction models (like Boosting, deep CTR).
  • Build the generation model by understanding business requests, exploring proper instructions, developing high-quality data, and finetuning a language model of billions of parameters (e.g., 13B, 60B).
  • Work closely with product and operation teams to quantitatively understand the impact of the chatbot and continuously bridge the business improvement action to model optimization action.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above in computer science or related field.
  • Solid coding skills, ability to develop in a Linux environment, proficient in Python, Go, or C++.
  • 2+ years of experience with solid foundation in data structures/algorithms, proficient in machine learning/deep learning theory, and rich practical experience.
  • Familiar with 1-2 areas in natural language processing, computer vision, multimodal, graph algorithms, search algorithms, text/data mining, and LLM.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, passionate about challenging problems.
  • Good team spirit and strong communication skills.
