About the position

The Machine Learning Engineer at Designer Brands is a pivotal role responsible for developing integrated AI/ML solutions that drive business value across the organization. This position involves designing, building, and deploying AI and machine learning models on cloud platforms such as GCP and Azure Open AI. The engineer will work with both structured and unstructured data, leveraging programming and data science skills to automate processes and enhance efficiency. The ideal candidate will possess a strong programming background and an analytical mindset, enabling them to translate complex technical requirements into actionable business solutions. They will be expected to thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating proactivity, goal orientation, and teamwork. In this role, the Machine Learning Engineer will collaborate with various stakeholders to understand their requirements, assimilate necessary data, and build predictive and prescriptive models. They will also be responsible for developing and implementing RAG architecture for model deployment, working closely with cloud data engineers to ensure efficient inference. The engineer will build an AI infrastructure that sets standards for leveraging cloud platforms, enabling and educating citizen data scientists to utilize machine learning effectively. Additionally, they will drive cross-functional teams to meet business objectives, influence stakeholders, and maintain strong working relationships. The position requires the ability to lead multiple initiatives and projects, developing custom self-service solutions that cater to various stakeholder groups. The Machine Learning Engineer will furnish analyses with insights while ensuring accuracy and completeness, identifying areas for improvement to maximize organizational value. This role is essential for aligning data solutions with business KPIs and goals, ultimately contributing to the strategic priorities of Designer Brands.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and fine-tune machine learning models.
  • Work with large datasets to train algorithms.
  • Preprocess data, select appropriate models, and optimize their performance.
  • Develop and deploy machine learning and AI models in cloud platforms to support strategic priorities across departments.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and build predictive/prescriptive models.
  • Communicate results and deploy predictions on edge or central database systems for real-time or batch predictions.
  • Develop and implement appropriate RAG architecture for model deployment.
  • Work closely with cloud data engineers to implement RAG effectively within cloud platforms.
  • Build an AI infrastructure and set standards for leveraging available cloud platforms.
  • Educate citizen data scientists on leveraging machine learning capabilities.
  • Develop strategic relationships with cross-functional teams to align data solutions with business goals.
  • Drive cross-functional teams to meet business objectives and influence stakeholders.
  • Lead multiple concurrent initiatives/projects to develop self-service solutions.
  • Furnish analysis with insights while maintaining accuracy and documentation.
  • Identify areas for improvement to maximize organizational value.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in analytics or computer science with 4+ years of experience developing and deploying machine learning models.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy in data analysis.
  • Experience with supervised and unsupervised deep learning algorithms and advanced libraries like TensorFlow, Keras, Pytorch, etc.
  • Experience leveraging foundational models like Claude 3.5, GPTs, Gemini, Llama, etc.
  • Knowledge of ethical and responsible AI principles in ML solutions is preferred.
  • Strong statistical knowledge and understanding of algorithms based on data and business needs.
  • Extensive background in statistical analysis, computational sciences, mathematics, physics, or econometrics.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in development and deployment of models in GCP including Vertex AI or Azure Open AI.
  • Experience in SQL for data mining and feature engineering.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform.
  • PhD in a statistical domain or topic.
  • Retail experience preferred.
