About the position

The Machine Learning Scientist Intern position at Expedia Group is designed for PhD students graduating between December 2025 and July 2026. This internship offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful projects that contribute to the company's mission of enhancing global travel experiences through innovative machine learning techniques. Interns will work closely with various teams, gaining hands-on experience in developing machine learning models, conducting data analysis, and presenting findings to senior leadership. The program emphasizes professional development, mentorship, and community engagement, making it an ideal environment for aspiring data scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Build pipelines and prototype new ML models with A/B testing.
  • Apply new techniques to services that handle high request volumes.
  • Use statistical methods to make sound inferences on data and A/B tests.
  • Utilize Natural Language models for keyword analysis and multi-objective ranking problems.
  • Communicate complex analytical topics clearly to partners and leadership.
  • Conduct feature engineering and modify existing models to meet business needs.
  • Develop expertise in fraud and risk detection.
  • Model online travel data to optimize business metrics and improve traveler experience.
  • Frame business problems as data science problems with clear tasks.

Requirements

  • Must be available for the full program dates (May 19-July 25, 2025 or June 23-August 29, 2025).
  • Must be graduating with a PhD in a technical subject between December 2025 and July 2026.
  • Must be willing to relocate to the job location if outside commuting distance.
  • Must have knowledge of Python and/or Scala, SQL.
  • Must have no more than 2 years of professional experience.
  • Must be graduating from a university in the same country as the internship location.

Nice-to-haves

  • Theoretical understanding of machine learning topics like Regression, Naïve Bayes, Deep Learning, etc.
  • Experience with programming and querying languages like Python, R, SQL/Hive, Java.
  • Understanding of distributed file systems and scalable datastores.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing, specifically AWS.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various partners.
