About the position

Abridge is seeking a Machine Learning Scientist specializing in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to join our innovative team. Founded in 2018, Abridge is dedicated to enhancing healthcare understanding through our AI-powered platform, which transforms medical conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time. Our technology integrates deeply with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and is designed to improve clinical documentation efficiency, allowing clinicians to focus on patient care. As pioneers in generative AI for healthcare, we are committed to setting industry standards for responsible AI deployment across health systems. In this role, you will be at the forefront of advancing the state of the art in medical NLP. Your work will involve areas such as conversation summarization, evidence extraction, outcome prediction, and the development of evaluation techniques. You will actively contribute to the broader research community by sharing and publishing original research, defining critical problems, identifying appropriate baselines, and developing state-of-the-art methods that will be implemented in production. Your ability to engage with real-time feedback from clinicians will be essential in guiding further refinements and innovations in our technology. We are looking for candidates who possess a strong research background, demonstrated through high-impact publications at peer-reviewed AI conferences, and who have significant real-world impact through open-source contributions and deployed technology. You will need to have strong programming skills and experience with deep learning libraries, as well as a genuine interest in the medical domain. At Abridge, we value a growth mindset and encourage team members to learn and develop new skills, making this an exciting opportunity for those looking to make a meaningful impact in healthcare through AI.

Responsibilities

  • Advance the state of the art in medical NLP, focusing on conversation summarization, evidence extraction, outcome prediction, evaluation techniques, and experimentation.
  • Contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing original research.
  • Define important problems, identify appropriate baselines, develop state-of-the-art methods, and implement them into production.
  • Engage with real-time feedback from clinicians to guide further refinements and innovations.
  • Maintain a results-oriented approach in the face of ambiguous problems and uncertain outcomes.

Requirements

  • Strong research background with a graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
  • High-impact publications at peer-reviewed AI conferences (e.g., ACL, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR).
  • Significant real-world impact demonstrated through open-source contributions and deployed technology.
  • Strong programming skills with proven experience in crafting, prototyping, and delivering machine learning solutions into production.
  • Experience with deep learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch, Jax, TensorFlow) and platforms, multi-GPU training, and statistical analyses of observational and experimental data.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the medical domain or healthcare-related projects.
  • Familiarity with generative AI technologies and their applications in healthcare.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.

Benefits

  • Unlimited PTO for salaried team members, plus 12 national holidays.
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave for all employees.
  • Flexible working hours with a focus on accomplishments rather than specific hours worked.
