About the position

The Machinist II at Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute is responsible for fabricating, maintaining, and repairing metal parts, tools, and equipment. This role involves manufacturing parts, welding, and providing technical support to faculty and students in research and instructional activities. The position requires a combination of technical skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manufacture parts from steel, aluminum, or other materials from drawings, prints, or verbal instructions to required tolerances.
  • Perform all types of welding, including MIG, TIG, and SMAW, to meet precise specifications and high-quality standards.
  • Inspect welds for quality and make necessary adjustments to maintain precision.
  • Provide support to laboratories and perform necessary maintenance on lab equipment.
  • Order parts for machine shop use.
  • Assist faculty and students in conducting tasks and experiments and support faculty with research projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, and frequently lift and move moderately heavy weight.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficient in all types of welding including MIG, TIG, and SMAW, primarily with Stainless Steel and Aluminum.
