About the position

The Mail & Package Processor position at Princeton University is a part-time role located in the Mail Services student mail and package room at the Frist Campus Center. This position is primarily responsible for processing mail and packages for students, utilizing package lockers and the service window at the mail and package room. The role involves scanning or entering tracking numbers and matching recipients to student records in the database. Once processed, packages are either placed in lockers or on shelves for student collection. The position requires a strong focus on maintaining the integrity, accuracy, safety, and confidentiality of all mail handled by Mail Services, adhering to USPS mailing standards and internal protocols established by Princeton University. In addition to package processing, the Mail & Package Processor will handle various client inquiries related to mail and package delivery. Responsibilities include ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively, as well as assisting with other duties at the Frist Campus Center as needed. This is a 10-month position, working 4 hours per day, 5 days a week, with anticipated workdays from Tuesday to Saturday, subject to change based on campus needs. The position is unionized, requiring membership in the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) Local 175 within 30 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Processing student packages using package processing software.
  • Isolating suspicious packages and letters according to USPS guidelines and internal protocols.
  • Recording damaged incoming packages or mail and updating the package locker system database.
  • Communicating package information to students and managing large packages in the oversized package room.
  • Sorting and filling student high-density mail folders in the Frist Campus Center.
  • Answering client inquiries regarding mail and parcel delivery status and the operation of the package locker system.
  • Distributing checks from the Office of Finance and Treasury to the correct recipients, requiring signatures.
  • Forwarding and readdressing mail to students, faculty, and staff, and removing non-deliverable mail for shredding and recycling.
  • Providing excellent customer service through the Service Now portal and assisting students with special requests for mail and packages.
  • Making recommendations to improve departmental performance and efficiency, and assisting supervisors with critical tasks and projects.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 6 months to 1 year experience in mailing and package handling.
  • Computer literacy with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds and maneuver packages up to 150 lbs with appropriate equipment or assistance.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous mail, shipping, and handling experience.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Post Office standards.
  • Experience with package and mail processing software, especially Asset Manager.
  • Prior experience working for an academic institution.
  • Experience in similar environments with industry leaders such as USPS, UPS, or FedEx.
