About the position

The Mainframe Developer position at Schwab involves working within the Billing, Bank & Move Money Technology (BBMMT) organization to support and modernize the Flexible Commissions (FLEX) platform. The role focuses on application development, testing, and maintenance, with an emphasis on delivering innovative financial solutions. The developer will collaborate with product owners and users, ensuring adherence to software development life cycle guidelines and compliance with audit and governance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire deep domain knowledge of the Flexible Commissions system and its upstream/downstream applications.
  • Provide support on production and development tasks, participating in application queues and ensuring task completion according to business priorities.
  • Create and foster strong partnerships with product owners and users, effectively communicating technology tradeoffs.
  • Ensure adherence to software development life cycle guidelines, including design document reviews and formal code reviews.
  • Implement robust testing strategies including unit testing, integration testing, regression testing, and QA testing.
  • Comply with STS Standards and policies, partnering with platform architects for alignment with technology strategy.
  • Discuss data and reporting requirements with architects and business partners for projects and enhancements.
  • Follow data governance approval processes and focus on formal data governance activities.
  • Meet commitments for audit and compliance, reviewing exceptions quarterly.
  • Contribute to cross-functional meetings and address delivery needs as required.
  • Be responsible for the quality delivery of software backlog items, end to end.
  • Utilize automated software test tools and frameworks to achieve quality standards.
  • Identify technology risks early and establish mitigation plans.
  • Leverage and support Agile software development practices.
  • Interface with technology and business team members to build trusted relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Approximately 8+ years of development experience, particularly in the Mainframe space.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work with remote teams.
  • Self-motivated and passionate about resolving complex business problems with innovative solutions.
  • Ability to work independently as a contributing member of a focused team.
  • Passionate about learning new technologies and translating requirements into technical specifications.
  • Experience partnering with QA teams to support test plan strategies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience in the financial services industry with knowledge of Broker/Dealer functions.
  • Experience working as part of an agile scrum team.
