About the position

As a Maintenance Electronic Apprentice at HP Hood LLC, you will embark on an exciting journey to develop your skills in a dynamic and inclusive work environment. This full-time position is based in Winchester, VA, where you will be part of a team dedicated to maintaining the efficiency and safety of our food manufacturing facility. The role is designed for self-driven individuals eager to learn and grow within the maintenance field, focusing on electronic and mechanical functions. You will be responsible for achieving assigned goals in maintenance, efficiency, safety, food quality, job performance, and cost control. Compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and corporate policies is essential as you learn to ensure that facility equipment operates at maximum efficiency with minimal downtime. Throughout your apprenticeship, you will build competence in various areas, including manufacturing equipment, PLCs, and other electronic/mechanical functions. You will develop technical skills in equipment operation, electrical troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance. Your training will include performing preventive maintenance tasks, operating various types of equipment, and learning to analyze and address problems associated with manufacturing equipment. You will also gain knowledge of safe lockout/tagout procedures and learn to troubleshoot electromechanical issues, ensuring that you are well-prepared for a successful career in maintenance. The position requires effective communication between shifts and departments, adherence to safety and sanitation practices, and a commitment to continuous learning and development. You will be expected to cover breaks and lunches as needed and report any safety concerns promptly. This role offers a competitive starting pay of $24.70 per hour, with increases at years two and three, and is eligible for a bonus program. The work schedule is Monday to Friday from 7 am to 3 pm, with the possibility of rotating shifts and travel for training throughout the program.

Responsibilities

  • Achieve assigned goals in maintenance, efficiency, safety, food quality, job performance, and cost control.
  • Comply with GMPs, SOPs, corporate and plant policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Learn and develop skills to ensure facility equipment operates at maximum efficiency with minimal downtime.
  • Build competence in manufacturing equipment, PLCs, and other electronic/mechanical functions.
  • Develop technical skills in equipment operation, electrical troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks on facility equipment as skills advance.
  • Operate various types of equipment, including electrical meters and personal hand tools.
  • Gain knowledge of equipment operation and energy sources related to safe lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Analyze and take appropriate action on problems associated with manufacturing equipment.
  • Troubleshoot electromechanical issues, including installation, diagnosis, calibration, and maintenance/repair of equipment.
  • Inspect and operate material handling equipment safely, including stretch wrap machines and forklifts.
  • Cover breaks and lunches and other staffing needs as assigned by the manager/coordinator.
  • Comply with legal requirements concerning dairy processing, SQF guidelines, and food safety.
  • Report safety concerns promptly and take corrective actions as necessary.
  • Ensure work areas are sanitary and adhere to sanitation practices.
  • Communicate effectively between shifts and other departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager/coordinator.

Requirements

  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as adding, counting, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.
  • Engage in and develop critical thinking skills related to mechanical and industrial troubleshooting.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to employee, vendor, and customer inquiries.
  • Read, write, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform job functions.
  • Knowledge of the company's mission, purpose, goals, and role in achieving them.
  • Ability to operate facility equipment as required in the assigned area.
  • Satisfactorily complete all company training requirements.
  • Ability to interpret company documents and UPC/code information.
  • Prefer prior training and education in industrial maintenance, industrial electrical, PLCs, Mechatronics, or similar fields.
