The Maintainer I position at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is a full-time role within the Custodial Services department, primarily responsible for performing general janitorial duties to ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of campus facilities. This position is essential and requires the ability to work overtime, return to work between scheduled shifts when directed, and report to work during any delays, early departures, and closures. The role involves a variety of tasks aimed at maintaining a clean, sanitary, and attractive environment for students, staff, and visitors. Key responsibilities include removing trash and waste from premises, cleaning bathrooms, and maintaining building interiors by dusting, washing, and polishing various surfaces. The Maintainer I will also be responsible for cleaning interior glass, maintaining carpet and hard floor surfaces, and ensuring that exterior areas adjacent to buildings are kept clean. Additional duties include replacing light bulbs, moving and arranging furniture, and performing simple general maintenance tasks. The position requires a commitment to excellent customer service and the ability to follow both oral and written instructions in English. The work schedule for this position is Wednesday to Sunday from 7 am to 3 pm, and candidates must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts as needed. This role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods and under varying climatic conditions. The Maintainer I will also maintain an orderly custodial closet and may be required to deliver packages within the building. Overall, this position plays a crucial role in supporting the university's mission by ensuring a clean and safe environment for all.

Responsibilities

• Removes trash and waste from premises and places it outside in the appropriate area.
• Cleans bathrooms including toilets, urinals, sinks, and showers to ensure sanitary conditions.
• Cleans building interiors by dusting, washing, and polishing walls, ceilings, doors, and furniture.
• Cleans interior glass and windows as required.
• Maintains carpet areas by vacuuming, shampooing, and spot removing stains.
• Maintains hard floor surfaces by sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing.
• Keeps exterior areas adjacent to buildings clean by sweeping, raking, and shoveling snow.
• Replaces light bulbs and washes light fixtures to maintain a safe environment.
• Moves and arranges furniture as required for an attractive facility.
• Removes water from areas caused by leaks or overflows using wet vacuums and pumps.
• Cleans offices, classrooms, laboratories, and other spaces using various materials and equipment.
• Maintains an orderly custodial closet and follows instructions on the proper use of materials and equipment.
• Delivers packages within the building as required.
• Maintains entryways and entryway mats by sweeping and vacuuming.
• Locks and unlocks premises to maintain security and ease of entry.
• Performs simple general maintenance by replacing belts and tightening screws.

Requirements
