About the position

The Maintenance Assistant at the New York State Psychiatric Institute plays a crucial role in ensuring the upkeep and functionality of the facility's structures and equipment. This position involves performing semi-skilled maintenance and repair work across various trades, including plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and electrical work. The Maintenance Assistant will utilize hand and shop tools to carry out routine, repetitive maintenance tasks, as well as installation and repair activities under the supervision of skilled trade workers. The role is designed for individuals who are looking to develop their skills in maintenance and repair while contributing to the operational efficiency of the psychiatric institute. In this position, the Maintenance Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including the replacement and repair of plumbing and steamfitting equipment, performing semiskilled carpentry activities, and assisting in masonry repairs. The role also includes painting and decorating work, as well as performing routine electrical tasks. The Maintenance Assistant will work closely with supervisors to learn and perfect their skills, ensuring that all maintenance activities are conducted safely and effectively. This position is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented, enjoy hands-on work, and are committed to maintaining a safe and functional environment for both staff and patients. The work schedule is full-time, Monday through Friday, with a total of 40 hours per week. The position is classified as non-competitive, meaning that it does not require a civil service examination for appointment. Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and have at least two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work, or have completed a relevant technical school course. Responsibilities

  • Perform routine replacement and repair of plumbing and steamfitting equipment.
  • Install new plumbing equipment according to layouts provided by the supervisor.
  • Repair and adjust water mixers, thermostats, and other fixtures.
  • Locate and unplug stoppages in plumbing systems.
  • Repair domestic steam equipment such as steam tables and dishwashers.
  • Perform semiskilled carpentry activities including repairing doors, windows, and furniture.
  • Operate shop machinery to make and assemble furniture and fixtures.
  • Assist in erecting and renovating buildings and structures under supervision.
  • Perform semiskilled masonry repairs and installation activities.
  • Assist in painting and decorating work, including interior and exterior painting.
  • Perform routine electrical tasks, including repairing electrical equipment and installing lighting fixtures.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trade worker.
  • Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course is acceptable.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
