About the position

The Maintenance Assistant (Plumber & Steamfitter) position involves assisting journey-level staff with plumbing repairs and maintenance across the Allegany Region. The role requires a combination of technical skills in plumbing and steamfitting, as well as the ability to perform general labor tasks. The incumbent will work under the direction of the Regional Maintenance Supervisor and will be responsible for various plumbing-related duties, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and maintaining records of daily activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist journey-level staff with plumbing repairs and maintenance across the Allegany Region.
  • Replace and repair water, sewer, natural gas, and propane supply lines.
  • Install and repair plumbing fixtures.
  • Cut, fit, and thread pipe.
  • Diagnose and repair drain lines.
  • Assist with projects that involve excavation and confined space entry.
  • Perform general labor tasks as required.
  • Assist in the operation and testing of potable water supplies and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on all assigned hand and power tools to ensure they are in good working order and in compliance with applicable codes.
  • Maintain daily activity reports, along with other required written records.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time experience in plumbing and/or steamfitting work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
  • Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course in plumbing and/or steamfitting.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
  • Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain it within the probationary period.
  • Valid Grade 1A Wastewater Operators Certification or ability to obtain it within the probationary period.
