About the position
The Maintenance Assistant position at the New York State Department of Transportation involves performing general maintenance tasks across various facilities in the Tioga Residency area. The role requires a combination of mechanical skills, manual labor, and the ability to respond to emergency situations. The Maintenance Assistant will work under the supervision of skilled tradespersons and may supervise others as needed.
Responsibilities
- General maintenance of all facilities in Tioga Residency coverage area, including the Owego and Nichols Rest Areas.
- Apply a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used within the Department.
- Perform moderate to heavy manual labor, including climbing ladders and working at heights.
- Perform routine replacement and repair of plumbing systems and installation of new equipment.
- Understand and work with natural gas and propane fired heating systems.
- Maintain and operate Clivus Multrum Composting toilet systems at Rest Areas.
- Cut, weld, and braze various metal materials and equipment.
- Perform semi-skilled carpentry activities, including repairs and construction of small buildings.
- Operate and maintain heating and hot water equipment, replacing parts as necessary.
- Perform routine electrical tasks, including repairs and running new circuits.
- Respond to emergency call-outs within one hour.
- May supervise others and serve a role within the Incident Command System during emergencies.
Requirements
- Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
- Completion of a two-year technical school course in a relevant field or equivalent experience and training.
- Possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.
