About the position

The Maintenance Assistant at Heron House is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance tasks to ensure the facility is safe, functional, and well-maintained. This role involves assisting with landscaping, maintaining equipment, and performing repairs on various systems within the building. The position requires a commitment to professionalism and a caring attitude towards residents, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with landscaping tasks, including mowing, trimming, and planting.
  • Maintain lawn care equipment.
  • Maintain exterior and interior door locks.
  • Maintain, repair, and clean windows and screens.
  • Clean and/or paint exterior surfaces as needed.
  • Replace burned out light bulbs in all areas of the facility.
  • Clean and change air filters.
  • Clean and vacuum refrigerator/freezer coils and compressors.
  • Service heating and cooling units according to manufacturer guidelines and facility policies.
  • Assist with fire drills and building evacuations.
  • Complete life safety code assignments.
  • Assist in maintaining plant operations and life safety records.
  • Complete safety audits as assigned.
  • Maintain handicapped bars in baths.
  • Assist with HVAC, electrical, and plumbing repairs.
  • Repair and replace light fixtures.
  • Test and record water temperatures.
  • Repair call systems, cords, call bells, bed alarms, and chair alarms.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on commercial washers and dryers.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers are current and in proper working order.
  • Perform minor equipment repairs.
  • Perform carpentry duties, including operating saws and hand tools.
  • Repair, remove, or replace ceiling tiles.
  • Repair walls, paint, caulk, strip and stain furniture, and repair floor tiles.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience with commercial maintenance and repair of buildings, plumbing, electrical systems, alarm systems, appliances, commercial stoves, refrigerators, air-conditioning, and heating units.
  • General construction experience preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Professional appearance and attitude.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to make independent decisions.
  • Genuine care for and understanding of the elderly and persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with peers, residents, family members, and the general public.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Patience, tact, positive disposition, and enthusiasm.
