About the position

The Maintenance/Construction Operator position at Dothan Utilities involves participating in the maintenance and construction of the city's wastewater collection and water distribution systems. The role includes assisting crews with various tasks related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of utility lines, as well as responding to emergency situations and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a crew engaged in the construction, repair, and maintenance of sanitary sewer and/or potable water distribution lines.
  • Assist in cleaning rights-of-way, including removing debris, trees, and brush.
  • Assist in the inspection, construction, installation, and maintenance of manholes, wastewater flow meters, pumping stations, water meters, fire hydrants, and sewer lines.
  • Perform cuts in asphalt/streets for repairs or new installations.
  • Meet with customers to exchange information and resolve problems.
  • Locate underground utilities, including water and sewer lines.
  • Monitor the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for issues.
  • Ensure compliance with ALDOT and safety guidelines.
  • Respond to emergency storm or outage situations and maintain logs.
  • Act as first responder to hazardous situations.
  • Assist in responding to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) according to EPA and ADEM guidelines.
  • Operate CCTV and vac-truck equipment for sewer line inspection.
  • Assist engineering staff with drawings and blueprints for installations.
  • Disinfect water mains to ensure safety during installations or repairs.
  • Complete reports in the Work Order System Software (Cityworks).
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent.
  • Six months of recent experience in utility work, including water or sanitary sewer systems or plumbing.
  • Certificate of completion from a Vocational High School Program or an accredited Technical College in a related field preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with EPA and ADEM regulations.
