About the position

The Maintenance/Groundskeeper I position at Palo Verde College involves performing essential cleaning and minor maintenance work within the college's buildings and grounds. The position is classified as moderately heavy work, which includes a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall maintenance of the college's infrastructure. The duties of the Maintenance/Groundskeeper I include keeping the exterior of buildings and sidewalks clean and well-maintained, stripping and waxing floors in classrooms and other facilities, and assembling and disassembling new furniture. The employee will also be responsible for maintaining all campus equipment, ensuring it is in top working condition, and keeping accurate records of all equipment used. Additionally, the role involves setting up and arranging furniture for events, making semi-skilled repairs to buildings and fixtures, and performing groundskeeping tasks such as planting, cultivating, and caring for trees, shrubs, and lawns. The employee will operate various grounds maintenance equipment, including power mowers and trimmers, and may be required to lift heavy objects and work at heights when necessary. The Maintenance/Groundskeeper I will also assist with shipping and receiving college products and materials, fill out necessary paperwork, and cover for janitorial staff in their absence. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying maintenance needs and reporting any hazards or defects to the supervisor. The employee is expected to maintain friendly relationships with staff, students, and the public while exercising economy in the use of supplies and utility services. Responsibilities

  • Keeps outside of buildings and concrete sidewalks clean and painted as needed.
  • Strips and waxes floors in classrooms and other facilities on and off campus.
  • Assembles and disassembles new furniture including tagging new items.
  • Keeps all campus equipment in top working condition and maintains records on all equipment.
  • Attends training out of town as required.
  • Sets up and arranges furniture and facilities as needed.
  • Makes semi-skilled maintenance repairs of buildings, fixtures, furniture, and equipment.
  • Plants, cultivates, prunes, trims, waters, fertilizes, and sprays trees, shrubs, and hedges.
  • Plants, fertilizes, waters, and cares for lawns.
  • Operates power mowers, edgers, trimmers, and other grounds maintenance equipment/tools.
  • Performs occasional heavy lifting and works on ladders or scaffolding when washing windows, ceilings, painting, trimming trees, or performing other work involving height.
  • Delivers supplies and runs errands.
  • Assists in filling out paperwork and forms.
  • Assists in setting up and maintaining the irrigation system.
  • Assists with shipping and receiving of college products and materials.
  • Covers in the absence of the janitor/custodian(s).
  • Performs related work as assigned by Supervisor or Director of Facilities.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of requirements for maintaining college buildings and grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in groundskeeper work.
  • Capability of keeping records of ground equipment and cleaning materials utilized.
  • Possession of skills and physical strength, and ability to operate, push, self-propelled and riding type mowers, electric and gas type trimmers.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to ground and cleaning equipment and to recognize mechanical failures.
  • Capability of operating heating and ventilating equipment.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions.
