The Maintenance Handyman position at Pamunkey Regional Jail is a skilled role focused on the repair and maintenance of equipment and systems within the facility. The incumbent will be responsible for performing routine tasks that ensure the operational efficiency of the jail's infrastructure while adhering to safety and security protocols. This role involves coordinating and directing contractors and inspectors, as well as supervising inmates during maintenance activities, all while maintaining the security of staff, inmates, and the community. The essential functions of this position include inspecting and maintaining all building environmental systems, such as HVAC, and performing repairs or replacements of complex mechanical equipment. The handyman will also be tasked with maintaining environmental control equipment through relevant repairs and routine maintenance, as well as installing, repairing, and replacing electrical devices, including all wiring. Routine maintenance tasks will encompass machinery cleaning, plumbing repairs, lighting and filter replacements, lock repairs, and roofing maintenance. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining logs and completing daily reports, as well as ordering, controlling, and inventorying building materials, tools, and cleaning supplies used within the facility. In addition to these responsibilities, the handyman will operate and maintain the facility's cooling plant, including pumps and cooling towers, and repair and maintain all types of refrigeration equipment, including kitchen appliances. Knowledge and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety policies, hazardous substances, environmental regulations, and State and Local building codes are crucial. The handyman will also maintain a Preventive Maintenance Program and ensure compliance with all Fire and Safety standards, logs, and documentation.
