About the position

Oneida Health is seeking a dedicated and reliable full-time Maintenance Helper to join our team. This position is essential for the operation and maintenance of our facilities, ensuring that our buildings and equipment are in optimal condition. The Maintenance Helper will perform a variety of unskilled manual tasks that are crucial for the upkeep of the premises. This role involves responsibilities such as painting, minor repairs, snow removal, and general maintenance duties. The Maintenance Helper will work under the supervision of a senior staff member and will receive general directions for each assignment, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. In this role, the Maintenance Helper will be responsible for preparing surfaces for painting, which includes scraping, sanding, washing, and applying paint and varnish remover. The individual will also participate in painting rooms and hallways, ensuring that the aesthetic standards of the facility are maintained. Additionally, the Maintenance Helper will manage readings on boiler gauges and assist in boiler cleaning, which is vital for the safe operation of heating systems. Other key responsibilities include performing minor carpentry work, such as repairing desks and office furniture, assisting in snow removal during winter months, and replacing defective fuses and light bulbs. The Maintenance Helper will also be tasked with repairing windows, replacing glass, and maintaining tools and machinery. Daily inspections of electrical and mechanical equipment will be part of the routine, along with taking air temperature and humidity readings to monitor static electricity levels. The role may also involve installing locks and maintaining written records of maintenance activities. The Maintenance Helper will be expected to perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall maintenance and safety of the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare surfaces for painting by scraping, sanding, washing, and applying paint and varnish remover.
  • Participate in painting rooms and hallways.
  • Manage readings on boiler gauges and assist in boiler cleaning.
  • Perform minor carpentry work such as repairs to desks, tables, and office furniture.
  • Assist in snow removal from sidewalks and grounds during winter months.

  • Perform minor masonry work.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Six months or more of related experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
  • Basic understanding of equipment upkeep and care.
  • Familiarity with cleaning compounds and chemicals and their safe use.
  • Capability to perform maintenance tasks such as painting, changing light bulbs, and minor plumbing repairs.
