About the position

The Maintenance Mechanic B CU position at Bayer in Berkeley, CA, is a union role focused on performing operational checks, repairs, and modifications to site utilities systems. The role requires collaboration with other crafts and adherence to safety, environmental, and operational policies. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring optimal performance of various utility systems, including ammonia plants, chillers, and boilers, while supporting Bayer's commitment to health and safety initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Perform operational checks, repairs, and modifications to site utilities such as ammonia plants, chillers, and boilers.
  • Assist in routine, unscheduled, and preventative maintenance on all site utility systems.
  • Execute LOTO of utility systems and equipment with guidance from senior personnel.
  • Assist in troubleshooting equipment performance issues and make necessary repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with Engineering standards, cGMP, and data recording/reporting of work orders.
  • Support Bayer's health, safety, and environmental protection initiatives.
  • Participate in reviews regarding repairs, replacements, and modifications of equipment.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED plus a minimum of two years of industrial maintenance experience, or one year of applicable military or merchant marine experience plus relevant field experience.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English for understanding instructions and technical documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot utility systems independently.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Acceptable attendance and performance record.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient understanding of process control systems related to site utilities.
  • Knowledge of refrigeration systems, boilers, and utility systems, including developing Energy Control Plans for LOTO.
  • Familiarity with other trades such as instrumentation, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC/R.
  • Ability to read and understand equipment drawings and technical manuals.
  • Experience using multi-meters for checking AC/DC voltages and amperage.
  • Computer skills for navigating building automated systems interfacing with utility equipment.
  • Knowledge of test equipment and chemistry for performing water quality tests.

Nice-to-haves

  • Universal Refrigeration or Boiler Operations Certifications.
  • SAP knowledge and proficiency in writing and executing SAP notifications.
