The Boston Fire Department (BFD) is dedicated to managing, maintaining, repairing, and providing security for its municipal buildings, including Headquarters and various Firehouses. The Maintenance Mechanic Foreperson (Plumber) plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of these facilities. Under the guidance of the Buildings System Engineer, this position involves a wide range of plumbing and maintenance tasks that are essential for the upkeep of BFD's infrastructure. The primary goal is to preserve the useful life of City facilities while reducing operating costs through effective preventative maintenance measures. In this role, the Maintenance Mechanic will be responsible for maintaining and repairing plumbing systems and fixtures within BFD's municipal buildings. This includes testing pipe systems, fixing leaks, and performing preventive maintenance as required. The individual will also be tasked with maintaining, cleaning, repairing, and diagnosing issues with both interior and exterior drains, lines, and fixtures. Installation of pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, and other plumbing components such as sinks and toilets will also be part of the job responsibilities. The use of hand and power tools is essential for performing these plumbing duties effectively. Additionally, the Maintenance Mechanic will prepare departmental records regarding work accomplished, tool inventories, and significant events during their shifts. Coordination with personnel from other City Departments may be necessary to complete tasks efficiently. The role also involves monitoring the performance of private contractors and ensuring that all preventative maintenance and record-keeping responsibilities are completed accurately. The Maintenance Mechanic will be responsible for isolating and draining exterior water systems for freeze protection and will need to monitor inventory to ensure adequate supplies are available for maintenance work. Maintaining safe working conditions in all areas under their control is also a critical aspect of this position.
