About the position

The Maintenance Mechanic I position at the City of Norfolk's Department of Human Services involves troubleshooting and resolving various facility maintenance issues. The position requires a hands-on approach to maintenance tasks, including plumbing, electrical work, HVAC systems, and general repairs, while also providing support for office setups and responding to emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshooting facility issues including plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.
  • Performing interior and exterior building paint maintenance.
  • Setting up extension ladders, fold ladders, and scaffolds for safe work.
  • Painting, plastering, and constructing temporary walls and office spaces.
  • Repairing and replacing ceiling tiles.
  • Inspecting fire extinguishers and conducting fire alarm inspections.
  • Conducting regular inspections of the facility generator.
  • Removing ice, snow, and storm debris.
  • Overseeing and assisting with clean-up after floods.
  • Changing electrical lamps and bulbs.
  • Monitoring the operation of HVAC systems.
  • Performing general maintenance functions such as repairing housekeeping equipment and plumbing repairs.
  • Loading, unloading, lifting, and carrying heavy construction materials and tools.
  • Overseeing and assisting with moving office furniture and equipment.
  • Responding to fire and burglar alarms after-hours.
  • Cleaning trash and debris in parking lots and exterior areas.
  • Driving city vehicles to pick up and deliver supplies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience as a building helper or apprentice.
  • Ability to read work orders, safety data sheets, and instruction manuals.
  • Ability to perform general math calculations.
  • Ability to write general correspondence and fill out work orders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five years of experience as a building helper, maintenance worker, or custodian.
