About the position

The Maintenance Mechanic I position at the City of Norfolk's Department of Human Services involves supporting facility maintenance operations by troubleshooting and resolving various maintenance issues. This role is essential for ensuring the safety and functionality of city facilities, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshooting facility issues including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.
  • Performing interior and exterior building paint maintenance and minor carpentry repairs.
  • Setting up extension ladders, fold ladders, and scaffolds to ensure a safe workplace.
  • Painting, plastering, and constructing temporary walls and office spaces.
  • Repairing and replacing ceiling tiles.
  • Inspecting fire extinguishers and conducting fire alarm inspections.
  • Conducting regular inspections of the facility generator.
  • Removing ice, snow, and storm debris.
  • Overseeing and assisting with clean-up after major and minor floods.
  • Changing electrical lamps and bulbs.
  • Monitoring the operation of HVAC systems.
  • Performing general maintenance functions such as repairing housekeeping equipment and plumbing repairs.
  • Loading, unloading, lifting, and carrying heavy construction materials, equipment, and tools.
  • Overseeing and assisting with moving office furniture and equipment.
  • Responding to fire and burglar alarms after-hours.
  • Cleaning trash/debris in parking lots/exterior.
  • Driving various city vehicles to pick up and deliver supplies.

Requirements

  • Knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
  • One year of experience as a building helper or apprentice.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five years of experience as a building helper, maintenance worker, or custodian.
