About the position

The City of Norfolk, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Mechanic II to join its General Services Facilities Maintenance Division. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the proper functioning and maintenance of over 250 city government facilities, including City Hall, public safety buildings, entertainment venues, and various recreational centers. The Maintenance Mechanic II will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance on HVAC systems, including commercial boilers, chillers, and air handler units, as well as making small repairs to building components and fixtures. This role is essential in maintaining a safe and efficient environment for city employees and residents alike. The Maintenance Mechanic II will inspect and perform preventative maintenance on various HVAC equipment, including air handler units and rooftop units. Responsibilities include changing filters and belts, checking bolts, pulleys, motors, and pumps, lubricating bearings, and cleaning equipment. The mechanic will also be tasked with repairing or replacing HVAC system components such as pumps, motors, valves, switches, transformers, connections, belts, pulleys, and filters. Familiarity with the HVAC systems of assigned buildings is crucial for coordinating necessary program adjustments, repairs, or changes with Operating Engineers. In addition to HVAC maintenance, the Maintenance Mechanic II will perform safety inspections on fire extinguishers and emergency lighting, repair or replace plumbing fixtures and lighting, and manage the installation or relocation of modular furniture and office components. The role requires obtaining estimates for materials and services, submitting purchase orders, and utilizing a work order management application to update assigned work orders with labor hours and materials used. This position is vital for maintaining the operational integrity of city facilities and ensuring a safe environment for all.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and perform preventative maintenance on air handler units, rooftop units, split AC units, and all associated equipment.
  • Change filters and belts, check bolts, pulleys, motors, and pumps, lubricate bearings, clean equipment, and clear drain lines and pans.
  • Repair and/or replace HVAC system components pertaining to commercial boilers, chillers, and air handler units, including pumps, motors, valves, switches, transformers, connections, belts, pulleys, and filters.
  • Become familiar with the HVAC systems of assigned buildings to coordinate needed program adjustments, repairs, or changes with Operating Engineers.
  • Keep mechanical spaces clean and clear of clutter/debris in all assigned buildings.
  • Perform safety preventative maintenance by inspecting fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.
  • Repair or replace plumbing fixtures, lighting, and various building components.
  • Repair, install, and/or move modular furniture system components, file cabinets, partitions, and other office case goods.
  • Obtain estimates for materials and/or services and submit for purchase order by following procurement procedure.
  • Use a work order management application (Facility Dude) to update assigned work orders with labor hours and materials used.

Requirements

  • Knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
  • Two years of experience as a maintenance mechanic.
