About the position

The Maintenance Mechanic, Semi Skilled position is a vital role within our Continuing Care Retirement Community, located in Batavia, Illinois. This position is responsible for providing semi-skilled maintenance services to ensure that the facility's buildings, grounds, and equipment are kept in good repair. The contributions made by the Maintenance Mechanic significantly enhance the safety, wellbeing, and comfort of both residents and employees. The role involves completing assigned work requests and preventative maintenance work orders as directed by the supervisor or department director. Tasks may include appliance repair, light carpentry, routine motor vehicle maintenance, plumbing repairs, and maintenance on heating and air conditioning systems, among others. The Maintenance Mechanic must adhere to Holmstad procedures and industry standards while performing these tasks. In addition to technical skills, the position requires physical stamina, as it involves prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting heavy objects, sometimes up to 70 pounds. The Maintenance Mechanic will also inspect facilities and systems to ensure safety and cleanliness, identifying necessary repairs as needed. The role requires the use of various hand tools and small power tools, and the maintenance of these tools to ensure they are in safe operating condition. The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of building care and maintenance, be a good steward of the tools and property, and possess the ability to troubleshoot issues as they arise. A willingness to learn and expand trade knowledge is essential, as is the ability to assist other maintenance staff when required. The Maintenance Mechanic must also be available for on-call duties as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned work requests and preventative maintenance work orders as directed by supervisor or department director.
  • Perform appliance repair, light carpentry, routine motor vehicle maintenance, plumbing repairs, and maintenance on heating/air conditioning systems.
  • Inspect facilities and systems for safety and cleanliness, identifying necessary repairs.
  • Use a variety of hand tools and small power tools, maintaining them in safe operating condition.
  • Assist with general labor tasks, including event setups, deliveries, and moves.
  • Troubleshoot building and equipment issues as they arise.
  • Maintain inventory and part supplies for maintenance tasks.
  • Provide housekeeping services as needed on occasion.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in maintenance or a related field required.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License and good driving record required.
  • Basic skills in auto/small engine mechanics, carpentry, appliance repair, plumbing, electrical work, and low voltage applications.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, up to 70 pounds.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written, in English.
  • Ability to interact with residents and staff in a pleasant manner.
  • Interest in and desire to work with older adults.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with emergency generators, swimming pools, fire alarms, valves, fixtures, and locks.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
