About the position

The Maintenance Mechanic at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance tasks under the Facilities Maintenance Service. This role involves visual inspections, operational testing, and repair work at the journeyman level, ensuring the facility is well-maintained and operational. The position requires physical labor and the ability to work in various conditions, contributing to the overall upkeep of the medical center.

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual examinations and operational testing of systems and equipment.
  • Construct walls, ceilings, and flooring systems as needed.
  • Install and repair finishes, doors, locks, and trim.
  • Make necessary repairs to wall finishes including plaster, drywall, vinyl, and paint surfaces.
  • Install and/or repair masonry walls and concrete slabs or foundation repairs.
  • Demolish architectural systems as required and clean up work areas.
  • Check and repair door and builder's hardware, and mount framed items such as bulletin boards.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience or training in maintenance work.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.
  • Experience in materials measurement and layout.
  • Proficient in using and maintaining tools and equipment with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare facility maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and practices in maintenance work.
