About the position

The Maintenance Mechanic position at the Department of Veterans Affairs Columbia VA Health Care System is a journeyman level role responsible for the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Environmental Mechanics Supervisor and will be expected to perform a variety of maintenance tasks across multiple trades, including air conditioning, pipefitting, electrical work, and welding. This full-time position requires proficiency in using various tools and testing devices, and the ability to work independently from blueprints and specifications.

Responsibilities

• Maintain buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities.
• Perform maintenance tasks in trades such as air conditioning, pipefitting, electrical work, and welding.
• Work from blueprints, drawings, or other specifications to complete assignments.
• Use hand tools, multimeters, electrical power tools, and torches proficiently.
• Follow assignments through to completion from layout to final assembly.
• Adhere to policies regarding quality and quantity of work.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience or training in maintenance mechanics or related fields.
• Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.
• Experience in equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
• Proficient in using and maintaining tools and equipment with minimal supervision.
