About the position

The Maintenance Repair Worker 3 position at the Madison Correctional Institution involves overseeing and performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair work. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety and functionality of the facility by conducting repairs in various areas such as electrical, plumbing, and carpentry, while also supervising inmate workers. The position requires a proactive approach to maintenance and repair, as well as adherence to security protocols within a correctional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as lead worker over inmates or other assigned staff in maintenance repair work.
  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair of equipment including electrical fixtures and appliances.
  • Conducts semi-skilled and skilled carpentry repairs on various structures and furniture.
  • Handles semi-skilled and skilled plumbing repairs on water and steam lines, fixtures, and pumps.
  • Performs interior custodial duties such as cleaning and maintaining floors and windows.
  • Carries out exterior grounds keeping duties, including snow and ice removal.
  • Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs or replacements on a continuous basis.
  • Performs systematic and routine preventive maintenance of assigned areas.
  • Operates machine tools and welding equipment for repairs.
  • Ensures secure maintenance of tools and completes tool counts and inventories.
  • Assists in related job crafts as required.
  • Controls and restricts inmate movement to assigned areas.
  • Conducts searches of inmates when a breach of security is suspected.
  • Responds to emergencies as needed.
  • Attends meetings and trainings and participates on institution committees.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic including addition and subtraction, and in reading, writing, and speaking common English vocabulary.
  • 12 months of training or experience in maintenance repair, including basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and masonry.
  • Experience in using associated hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Valid commercial driver's license required if operating regulated motor equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a correctional facility environment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols in maintenance work.
