About the position

The Maintenance Repair Worker 3 position at the Ohio Reformatory for Women is a full-time role focused on performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair work. This position involves leading and directing inmates or other assigned staff in various maintenance tasks, including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and groundskeeping. The worker will be responsible for inspecting buildings and equipment for necessary repairs, performing preventive maintenance, and ensuring the secure maintenance of tools and equipment. The role also includes custodial duties, snow and ice removal, and responding to emergencies as needed. The Maintenance Repair Worker 3 will participate in institution committees and attend meetings and training sessions to enhance their skills and knowledge in maintenance practices. In this role, the worker will engage in a variety of tasks such as repairing light fixtures, electrical outlets, plumbing fixtures, and performing carpentry repairs on doors, cabinets, and other structures. The position requires a proactive approach to maintenance, ensuring that all equipment and facilities are in good working order to support the safe and secure environment of the correctional facility. The worker will also be responsible for controlling inmate movement and conducting searches when necessary, highlighting the importance of security in this role. Overall, this position is crucial in maintaining the operational integrity of the facility and contributing to the overall mission of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as lead worker over inmates or other assigned staff in maintenance repair work.
  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair of equipment including electrical fixtures and appliances.
  • Conducts semi-skilled and skilled carpentry repairs on various structures.
  • Handles semi-skilled and skilled plumbing repairs on water and steam lines, sewer pipes, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Performs interior custodial duties such as mopping, sweeping, and waxing floors.
  • Carries out exterior groundskeeping duties and removes snow and ice from sidewalks.
  • Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs or replacements on a continuous basis.
  • Performs systematic and routine preventive maintenance of assigned areas.
  • Operates machine tools and welding equipment for repairs to metal parts and equipment.
  • Ensures secure maintenance of tools and completes tool counts and inventories.
  • Assists in related job crafts as required.
  • Controls/restricts inmate movement to assigned areas and conducts searches when necessary.
  • Responds to emergencies and attends meetings and trainings.
  • Participates on institution committees.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic including addition and subtraction, and in reading, writing, and speaking common English vocabulary.
  • 12 months of training or experience in maintenance repair including basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and masonry.
  • Experience in the use of associated hand and power tools and equipment is required.
  • A valid commercial driver's license is required if operating motor equipment regulated by Ohio law.

  • Experience in a correctional facility environment.
