About the position

The Maintenance Supervisor at Hampton Roads Transit is responsible for overseeing the maintenance staff in a variety of tasks related to vehicle upkeep and repair. This includes conducting preventative maintenance inspections, heavy maintenance, repairs, and ensuring compliance with state safety inspections. The supervisor will provide onsite technical assistance to the Operations team and keep the Manager of Fleet Maintenance informed about personnel actions and the status of vehicle and equipment maintenance. The role requires a proactive approach to managing the daily operations of the Bus Maintenance Department, ensuring that all maintenance activities are performed efficiently and effectively. In this position, the supervisor will be tasked with the daily assignment of labor, which includes reviewing payroll and submitting accurate time records bi-weekly. They will ensure compliance with HRT rules and regulations, facilitate effective working relationships among employees and managers, and conduct performance coaching as necessary. The supervisor will also be responsible for managing work orders, logging road calls, and preparing maintenance reports. They will coordinate efforts to ensure sufficient bus availability for operations and oversee quality control initiatives within the shop. The Maintenance Supervisor will be expected to recommend and evaluate innovative maintenance strategies, develop team spirit among personnel, and ensure the safe operation of all shop equipment. They will track and monitor vehicle maintenance, ensuring corrective actions are taken as needed, and maintain accurate records in compliance with corporate and regulatory standards. The role also involves ensuring the cleanliness and security of the facilities during assigned shifts and preparing documentation for audits and reviews. The supervisor must attend mandated training and promote a culture of safety within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise maintenance staff in performing preventative maintenance inspections, heavy maintenance, repairs, and state safety inspections.
  • Provide onsite technical assistance to Operations and keep the Manager of Fleet Maintenance informed of personnel actions and vehicle maintenance status.
  • Assign daily labor and review payroll, submitting accurate time records bi-weekly.
  • Ensure compliance with HRT rules, regulations, and policies, and facilitate effective working relationships with employees and managers.
  • Conduct performance coaching and inform the Superintendent of work rule violations.
  • Open, close, and file Work Orders and log Road Calls into the Vehicle Information Management system.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate maintenance daily and monthly reports and records.
  • Coordinate efforts to ensure sufficient numbers of buses for the Operations Department daily.
  • Manage shop quality control initiatives and perform in-process reviews of maintenance work.
  • Recommend and evaluate innovative ways to improve fleet maintenance and team dynamics.
  • Schedule and manage work productivity based on shop goals.
  • Ensure safe operation and maintenance of all shop equipment and expedite repairs as needed.
  • Monitor and ensure corrective action for all vehicle maintenance and track completed maintenance on a daily spreadsheet.
  • Oversee work performed in the Diagnostic Bays as needed and order parts according to delivery schedules.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Bus Maintenance Department and implement management goals and priorities.
  • Ensure proper staffing levels and compliance with HRT rules and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate computerized and paper maintenance records in compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare documentation for FTA triennial reviews and audits.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in vehicle maintenance, preferably in a Heavy-Duty Vehicle environment.
  • Ability to maintain effective communication with all levels of management and labor.
  • Strong decision-making skills based on technical experience and knowledge.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and software applications relevant to job duties, including MS Windows, MS Office, Spear, and others.
  • Minimum qualifications include an associate degree in automotive/diesel maintenance or related fields, with additional training or experience preferred.
  • Internal candidates must be full-time bus mechanics with at least two years of supervisory experience in vehicle maintenance functions.

Nice-to-haves

  • ASC certification(s) preferred.
