About the position

The Maintenance Supervisor at Milwaukee County Zoo is responsible for overseeing maintenance tasks and ensuring high-quality completion of repairs. This role involves supervising maintenance staff, scheduling tasks, and maintaining a positive work culture. The supervisor will also assist with various maintenance projects and ensure compliance with safety standards in a unique zoo environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the repair and maintenance of Zoo structures, equipment, and enclosures.
  • Change lights, belts, and filters; clean, grease, lubricate, and repair walls, doors, locks, windows, and screens.
  • Perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs, monitor HVAC equipment, and maintain records.
  • Assist with animal moves and skilled trades, and other jobs and duties that may be assigned.
  • Supervise the work and performance of the maintenance staff and provide leadership through motivation, engagement, feedback, support, and development.
  • Maximize employee and team effectiveness; schedule and direct work assignments as well as authorize time recording.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, and evaluation of the team.
  • Maintain a positive culture of collaboration, accountability, and respectful behavior.
  • Plan and procure the necessary resources to allow for successful maintenance projects.
  • Maintain vital records for the Maintenance Department.
  • Participate in continuing education opportunities and provide support to the Skilled Trades team when the Mechanical Services Manager is not on-site.
  • Perform other administrative assignments needed to maintain the Zoo and act as a weekend rotating supervisor for the Facilities Division.
  • Assist in the fabricating, designing and building of crates, cages, and fencing that includes altering the function of equipment, and constructing shelving, carts, and furniture, props and more.
  • Safely and properly operate trucks, power lifts, plows, forklifts, various types of electrical and gas powered hand tools and other equipment as needed.

Requirements

  • Current resident of Wisconsin required.
  • Valid WI Driver's License required.
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Lifting/Carrying of up to 50 lbs and Pushing/Pulling of up to 100 lbs required.
  • At least two (2) or more years of related work experience in the building trades or maintenance field is required.
  • Supervisory/Management experience of at least one (1) or more years in the maintenance field of work required.
  • Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with payroll systems required.
  • Intermediate knowledge of and experience with CityWorks required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous training in the building trades preferred.
  • Previous experience in leading staff in day-to-day work is preferred.
