The Maintenance Tech I position at the Department of Tourism and Recreation is a full-time role focused on the construction, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of state properties, including buildings and grounds. The role encompasses a variety of tasks, including assisting in construction or renovation projects, performing general maintenance, and executing minor repairs across plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical systems, and machinery. The Maintenance Tech I will be responsible for ensuring that all facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained, contributing to the overall quality of state-owned properties. In this role, the technician will perform carpentry work, which includes constructing or renovating buildings, erecting scaffolds, and maintaining various structures. Responsibilities also extend to plumbing, where the technician will install, replace, and repair fixtures such as sinks and faucets, as well as conduct minor repairs on laundry and kitchen equipment. Electrical maintenance is another critical aspect of the job, involving the upkeep of light fixtures, switches, and generators, along with troubleshooting electrical issues that do not require a licensed electrician. The Maintenance Tech I will also be tasked with maintaining security devices, constructing concrete foundations, and operating various types of construction and maintenance equipment. This position requires a solid understanding of the materials, methods, tools, and safety precautions associated with building and maintenance trades. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to follow both written and oral instructions effectively, ensuring that all tasks are completed to the highest standards of safety and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Perform carpentry work in the construction or renovation of buildings or additions to existing structures.
  • Erect and maintain scaffolds, sheds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures.
  • Alter and repair doors, floors, partitions, stairways, windows, screens, and other fixtures.
  • Fit and glaze glass in windows and doors; maintain and repair roofs.
  • Install, replace, alter, maintain, and repair plumbing fixtures such as sinks, traps, and faucets.
  • Make minor repairs to laundry equipment, sterilization equipment, kitchen equipment, and other equipment using water, steam, air, or other feed lines.
  • Maintain and repair light fixtures, receptacles, and switches; replace light bulbs.
  • Maintain generators and motors; oil and clean motors; troubleshoot and make electrical repairs not requiring a license.
  • Maintain and make minor repairs to various types of heating, refrigeration, and air-conditioning equipment.
  • Install and maintain locks and other security devices; repair or replace tumblers, springs, and other parts; cut new or duplicate keys.
  • Construct, maintain, and repair concrete and other foundations; build retaining walls, walks, fireplaces, chimneys, stairways, and similar projects.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair various types of equipment used in construction and maintenance of buildings and grounds.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in one or more of the building trades or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in various building and maintenance trades.
  • Understanding of hazards and safety precautions related to the trade in which work is performed.
  • Skill in using tools and equipment for maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Nice-to-haves
